An elegant pre-Civil War knight head sword with a blade decorated for over half its length with etched panels that contain patriotic and foliate motifs. Maker mark is etched within the motifs on the obverse side and reads "HORSTMANN / & SONS / PHILADELPHIA". The blade exhibits a gray patina with muted etching and scattered blemishes throughout. Wide cross guard in the shape of a spread winged federal eagle. Attractive engraved hexagon silver grip that features different engraved foliage on each side. Knight head pommel with two-chain guard. Hilt exhibits pleasing patina with traces of muted gilding on the guard. The sword is complete with its original gilded scabbard that is engraved on the obverse side. Maker marked "HORSTMANN / & / SONS / MAKERS / PHILADA" on a raised scroll on the reverse side. Decorated mounts and drag. The scabbard retains nice amounts of its original gilding, though muted, with scattered blemishes. CONDITION: Good.
