UTSUSHIMONO WAKIZASHI IN KENUKIGATA MOUNTS
This is a good example of a Japanese utsushimono, which pays homage to the earliest form of Japanese sword with an extremely deep sori and kenukigata style mounts. Kenukigata mounts are called as such because of the piercing through the nakago that resembles hair tweezers, called kenuki. This example with a simple lacquered design at the tsuka, with a lacquered fuchi with linework about the perimeter and a leather tsuba with a copper core. The saya is in the shape of a broad oar with a design of a mussel near koiguchi, with the bottom two thirds decorated with sea life designs and bubbles. The blade measures 31.2cm with a 11.5cm nakagojiri with agari kurijiri, and measures 19 - 3/8" in mounts. The sword is mumei (unsigned) and ubu (uncut) but appears to be Echizen Seki, with a choji-midare hamon with some pointed gunome. Healthy boshi. Jigane indistinct Purple cord at kabuto-gane. CONDITION: Blade is very good in an old polish, with some minor handling marks, one pockmark under the habaki that is not visible when mounted. Saya very good with rubs and scuffs, and a repair along the spine and cutting edge. This is a good example of a scarce form that virtually does not exist on the private market.
