This splendid heavy saber displays characteristic Ottoman Kilij form, however, it appears to have both Cyrillic lettering as well as Arabic calligraphy. The 27-1/2" Kilij blade is 1-1/2" wide and etched and Damascened in gold with both Arabic and Cyrillic letters in imitation of an Ottoman Kilij. It appears to have a date on the left side and Ottoman cartouche on left with Cyrillic etched and gilt letters at ricasso. Blade is pattern welded with long yelman, brass cross guard and hilt of Turkish form with ivory grip scales. Scabbard with finely engraved brass mounts, covered in fine shagreen. CONDITION: Blade is infine condition, and appears to have been blued at some time. All gilt finish is visible and mostly intact with only very minor wear. Ivory grip scales with small chip where grip joints with cross guard on both sides, otherwise, very good with fine patina. Brass mounts are fine throughout with only extremely minor dents. Original shagreen is mostly intact with some original finish. One of the most impressive swords we have seen, it has been our pleasure to catalog. Further research on the Cyrillic and Arabic inscriptions could only enhance the desirability of this fine Kilij.
