SCARCE VOLCANIC ARMS NO 2 NAVY SIZE LEVER ACTION PISTOL. VOLCANIC LARGE FRAM ENGR 1810 41 CAL Cal. 41. Usual configuration with 8" oct bbl that has integral magazine tube and fixed sight in top flat of frame. Top flat of bbl has a clear 3-line Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. address with 1854 patent date. Mounted with smooth 2-pc rosewood grips whose right side escutcheon is stripped in the grip and therefore grips could not be removed to check for additional matching numbers. Frame and sideplates were orig silver plated and have typical early foliate arabesque engraving patterns on the frame, sideplates and backstrap. Pistol has a very clever alteration to the loading system which consists of a band fitted and screw attached around the muzzle end with a Winchester-style magazine plug. The right side rib has a sliding latch which secures the rotating loading sleeve when in the forward position. To load one simply retracts the tab and rotates the sleeve in a normal manner. Magazine follower is steel & appears to be from an earlier Smith & Wesson Volcanic pistol. There were about 1500 Navy size pistols produced by Volcanic Repeating Arms, 1855-1857. Few survive today in orig configuration with any orig finish. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. "Bill" Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: About good. No orig finish remains on the bbl and magazine tube begin a mottled grey/brown patina with areas of pitting on the left side. Frame and sideplates retain 30-40% orig silver, mostly on the right side and around the trigger. Hammer is heavily pitted. Right grip has a crack through the escutcheon area and both grips show moderate wear. Mechanics are fine. Strong bore, dark in the grooves. 49973-413 JR30 (6,000-10,000)
