One of the most iconic items of the California Gold Rush and western expansion is the dark green Wells Fargo strongbox. This fine example bears the correct makers stencil inside lid "MANUFACTURED BY / J.Y. AYER / 3740 SEVENTEENTH S / S. F. CAL." Also visible inside the lid are traces of various office express labels for different locations. Period forged hinges and reinforcements are all original. This example retains the metal carrying ring versus the earlier leather straps that were prone to breakage. Drop shadowed company lettering "WELLS FARGO/ & CO." is at about 60%. CONDITION: Good overall with honest moderate to heavy period wear.
