A fantastic, circa 1863-1900 example of a classic gamblers or gentleman's push dagger. Made by the preeminent San Francisco cutler of the time and marked, 'WILL & FINCK / S.F. CAL' on the ricasso. 7 - 1/2" overall with a 5" blade. This example retains the lapped seam on the original silver scabbard. The handle, typical of San Francisco cutlers, is made from walrus ivory, and exhibits a fine patina. For a similar examples see pg. 71 in Bernard Levine's Knife Makers of Old San Francisco, 1977; see also 'The Bowie Knife Unsheathing an American Legend' by Norm Flayderman, pgs. 355, 2004. This exact dagger is pictured in 'California's Best: Old West Art And Antiques', pg. 152, by Brad and Brian Witherell, 1999. CONDITION: Fine overall. Blade retains much of its original polish and shine with some light scratches and pin prick pitting seen if held in the right light. Nice makers mark on ricasso as can be seen in photos along with a sharp factory tip. The silver plated scabbard and belt clip retain 98% original silver overall.
