Lot #1058:
(A) AUSTRIAN STEYR MODEL 1867/77 WERNDL-HOLUB SINGLE SHOT RIFLE.
Austria's first purpose built standard issue metallic cartridge rifle began replacing Wanzl Lorenz conversion rifles in Austro-Hungarian service in the late 1860s. This early example is dated "868" on the lock plate for 1868 and has an 1870 Steyr "St. 70" acceptance at the breech. Action has been updated for the more powerful 1877 cartridge. Standard sights. Reapplied blue finish throughout. Hardwood stock with 55 LSt.B. / 1112" 55th Landsturm Battalion unit marked butt plate. CONDITION: Very Good as restored. Nearly all of the reapplied blue is retained. Stock has been refinished nicely, fitting somewhat shy to mounts. A small split present ahead of the lock plate. Well defined bore with some expected black powder abrasion. Fine mechanics.
