Round barrel with a wide 5/8" ring over chamber, equipped with an island for a blade front sight, actual blade missing, and a notch rear sight. 2 crowned pennant proofs over breech. Trumpet ramrod, probably the original, retained by a pair of ferrules with flared mouths and feeding into a reinforced mouth. Stock retained by keys, no escutcheons, with sling loops at forearm and attached to trigger guard. Stepped lock simply marked "P-BOND", equipped with a waterproof pan, roller bearing frizzen, filed frizzen spring. Brass sideplate with 2 lockbolts and third screw. Brass trigger guard with pineapple finial. Brass wrist plate marked "LLV / 3rd Regt / John Phipps / Light Company / 1803". The Loyal Lancaster Volunteers were a volunteer unit from the Napoleonic era, gaining the alternate "Royal Lancaster Volunteers" when they received artillery in 1797. This wrist escutcheon appears to be more of a bookkeeping nature, as in 1803 the LLV reformed, adopted buttons with the LLV marking, and developed new regulations and training but do not appear to have actually engaged in any actual combat, not receiving their colors until November 12th, 1803 and being inspected December 3rd. Stock with a British storekeeper mark reading "TM / LL / 18 / REG". Brass buttplate with spearpoint heel. White leather sling. CONDITION: Overall very good, befitting a gun that does not appear to have seen much if any service. Barrel is largely gunmetal grey, with even light peppering and spots of oxidation. Lock commensurate, somewhat cleaner. Brass has a hazy, uncleaned, mustard patina. Stock is excellent, storekeeper mark is largely crisp, with some chipping around stock pins, and some verdigris where sling makes contract with brass. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent with a few pits towards muzzle. EMW
