(A) CIVIL WAR ALTERED US CONTRACT REMINGTON MODEL 1841 "MISSISSIPPI" PERCUSSION RIFLE
Often referred to as the Mississippi Rifle, these were built for a Government contract by Remington in Herkimer, New York from 1846 through 1854 with a total delivered production of approximately 10,000 units. Lock is marked "US 1848" along with Remington legend. In 1861, 2,352 of these U.S. Model 1841 rifles were sent to Lancaster, Pennsylvania gunsmith Henry E. Leman who rebored them to .58 caliber and modified with a 3" section of turned-down muzzle to accept a standard US socket bayonet. They were then returned to the Government for distribution. The barrels were originally browned along with case color lock. All iron is now in the white. Features the brass furniture such as the buttplate, right side patchbox, side plate, trigger guard, two barrel bands, and the brass tip metal rod. The small brass front sight was moved to just rearward of the start of turn down. Fixed rear barrel sight, two swivels, and full length walnut stock. Barrel breech is stamped with proof "P", "STEEL", and small "JCB" inspector proof for Joseph C. Bragg indicating Remington used an earlier made barrel. The left side of stock has a 1" carved "HS" indicating a prior owner. CONDITION: Very good. All iron is now in the white showing oxidation and freckling. All legends are legible. Stock is very good and solid showing numerous scattered dings and dents. Mechanically sound with a strong rifled bore displaying some abrasion. Brass has been cleaned at one time.
