Lot #1084:
(A) COLT MODEL 1878 SIDE BY SIDE SHOTGUN
According to the factory letter, this gun was shipped to H&D Folsom Arms Co in New York in a one gun shipment on October 13, 1882. It is listed with the blue finish, wood stocks and factory engraved grade 8. This gun does reveal the light English style scroll engraving on the case color frame, fences, hammers and the trigger guard. The barrels have a beautiful Damascus pattern as well as two ivory bead sights, the rear one placed far closer to breech than usual. The rib has the Colts legend and is fitted with manual ejectors. The Colt legends are also found on both of the side locks. Gun features dual triggers, a round knob checkered walnut stock with scarce "THE CLUB GUN" gutta percha butt plate with Colt pony along with the matching splinter forearm having the ebony inset. Base of stock also has the silver oval id plate. CONDITION: Very good to fine. The frame still boasts some remnants of case color in protected areas. The barrels display a lovely pattern and have oxidized to a soft patina showing some age freckles. Stocks are excellent showing sundry light dings and impressions retaining crisp checkering. Mechanically sound and retains bright bores. It is interesting to note that this gun does not have the dolls head extension that most historians believe came about around 1880 at serial number 6000 range which was not the case on this shotgun.
