(A) CONFEDERATE GOVERNMENT PRODUCED SHARPS SINGLE SHOT PERCUSSION CARBINE.
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/13/2025
Manufactured at the former S.C. Robinson factory in Richmond, Virginia by the Confederate Government after they purchased the factory in March of 1863. Barrel is .52 caliber with 6-groove rifling, broad based iron blade front sight, and simple "V" notch rear sight. Just behind rear sight, barrel is marked "RICHMOND.VA" in the correct style. Matching serial numbers observed on rear of lockplate and on barrel underneath forearm retention spring, however, tang is not numbered. Forearm has correct flat brass barrel band. Stock has brass buttplate, sling swivel, and correct slide bar with cavalry carbine ring. Stock is carved with "J.J.J" on left side. CONDITION: Good, with iron assemblies turned an untouched brown patina. Brass assemblies are a pleasing mellow patina. Forearm has a longitudinal crack from barrel band to receiver face with an approximately 1 -3/4" piece missing near receiver face. These cracks often happened during the period, with one cavalry company complaining that 7 out of 9 carbines cracked this way when tested. Stock has scattered heavy handling marks and minor age related splitting, especially on bottom of stock, but is otherwise strong. Bore has strong rifling with age related freckling throughout.
