John Dutcher explains this model in detail beginning on page 213 of "Ballard: The Great American Single Shot Rifle". This rare rifle features the round barrel with engraved muzzle. The barrel breech sports the engraved muzzle flats with "Ballard" in ribbon on top flat. The deluxe grain walnut stock features the swept checkered pistol grip with ebony inset, a roll over cheek piece and the nickel plated brass Farrow pattern light Swiss butt plate. The checkered forearm features the black tip. Border paneled checkered trigger and type 3 checkered hammer. Matching number on base of barrel and frame but there is a factory error on butt plate stamp that reads 9108 instead of 9180. Left side of frame exhibits the J.M. Marlin legend. Spirit level front sight with a mid range Vernier tang sight. The fine Ulrich factory engraving consists of a pair of deer on left side vignette and a buffalo on the right side, all surrounded by American bank note scroll. The frame, lever and hammer are color case finished while barrel is rust blued. CONDITION: Excellent. The frame retains generous case color but is softening. Barrel retains majority of its blue but is thinning and shows scattered freckles. The stocks are excellent with sharp checkering and nominal impressions. Mechanically sound with a bright bore. The wrist has none of the usual cracking. Simply a beautiful rifle.
