For the only other known example, see S-37 on pages 98-99 of "Weapons of the American Revolution" by Warren Moore. The carbine has a tapered round barrel with bayonet lug mounted on top towards the muzzle. The flat lockplate has beveled edges and the center is inscribed "Manuftr / de Charleville". The lock is marked behind the pan with a star over "D" indicating 1768 modifications. The rear band and front band are brass, while the center band is iron, which is correct for this model. The triggerguard and sideplate are also brass, while the buttplate is iron. The highly figured walnut stock is carved with American initials "NE" on the right side of the buttstock and deeply stamped with a "D" on the left side, which is the inspector mark for Charleville. CONDITION: Very good, overall. Barrel and lock retain a brown patina. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration, does not hold on full cock. The word "Manfactur" is very faint. Stock shows some scattered marks from use, minor age cracks and minor chipping above back of lock. A very rare and important Revolutionary War carbine.
