This is absolutely one of the finest condition original Gatling guns offered for public auction in the last 25 years. It is one of 44 "Long" Gatling guns purchased by the U.S. Army. Serial number 130 on right side of the frame, assembly numbers "34" matching on all the original bolts and barrels, and numbered “47” at top front of frame. This cataloger removed and examined each bolt, and each bolt matched its respective barrel, and each bears the same assembly number "34". This is a ten-barrel Gatling gun on its original “N.J.” marked wood carriage with original furnishings including original iron-bound wheels, no ammunition boxes present. Original brass plate on top of the gun reads “GATLING'S BATTERY GUN / MADE BY COLT'S / PT. FIRE ARMS / MFG CO / HARTFORD, CONN. / U.S.A." with patent dates. Original brass elevation screw and adjustment wheel. Five original gravity feed vertical magazines are included with this gun. Two small wedged pieces to chock the wheels and a wood and glass display enclosure are included with this gun. PROVENANCE: Presented to Lafayette College by William Simon, class of 1952, as indicated by display sign included with this gun. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine with correct gray patina barrels, which were never blued. This cataloger examined each bore and all are near excellent, shiny and bright. It is just incredible to find a Gatling gun of this vintage in this condition. Wood is extremely fine, solid and serviceable with some cracks from age yet still presenting exceptionally well. Mechanics are extremely fine and smooth. This cataloger made many rotations incidental to removing and carefully examining each bolt. This gun is an amazing piece, and its originality and condition are especially impressive. A piece of history of in original configuration as it would have been in the 1870s. Like the Gatling Custer unfortunately left behind and did not take to his engagement at the Little Big Horn. No telling if there will ever be a Gatling combining so many favorable elements offered for sale again. JWK 2024-05-078.
