Beginning in 1869-70, the firm of J&G Needham, using almost exclusively US Bridesburg 1861 rifled muskets, performed machining to allow conversion for self contained cartridge use. At that same time, in 1870, an Irish group, the Fenians, attempted a second conquest of Canada, this time through Vermont. Their reason was leverage for Ireland's independence. They contracted to have these rifles manufactured but their struggle was soon put down and all confiscated weapons were sold wholesale by the US government through action. This gun has all the traits listed for those weapons made for the Fenians. There is a long nose affixed to the hammer, a V shaped stock splice under the mid barrel band, an IN inspection stamp on left side stock attributed to the Fenians and an O stamped on lock. It is also serial numbered on right side of barrel. Standard features include the full length walnut stock, three band, metal rod, two leaf folding rear sight and Bridesburg 1861 lock stamp. CONDITION: Very good. All metal is a smooth in the white with overall scattered age freckling and smooth patina. Stock is excellent with usual dings. Bore is mirror bright. A true piece of Civil War and Irish American history.
