This fine French officer's fusil was probably made circa 1774. Joseph Dumarest worked in St. Etienne, in close proximity to St. Etienne arsenal. This fine officer's fusil features a round barrel decorated with the French crest at the breech and engraved "COULAUX A HUNINGUE" along the top. The tang is stamped "I B". The 1774 style lock is flat with a convex tail section and a reinforced convex cock; center inscribed "Joseph / Dumarest". The steel mounts are in the military style with the addition of nicely executed fleur-de-lis finials on trigger guard front tang, buttplate tang, and back of the sideplate. There is a 1763 style ramrod sleeve between the muzzle band and center band. The walnut stock of French form is carved with relief panels around lock and sideplate that terminate in teardrops. Relief fleur-de-lis carved around barrel tang. Complete with its original steel ramrod and 1774 type socket shield bayonet. CONDITION: Very good, all steel components polished bright in the European manner. Some wear to barrel inscription, traces of gilt. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and functions well. Stock shows scattered storage marks, minor crack on right side just behind center barrel band.
