This musket dates to around 1740 and is similar to the Prussian Potsdam Model 1740 muskets but is much more slender. Its is identical to one captured at Bennington that is now at West Point. For two other examples of this musket, see pages 222 and 223 of "Muskets of the Revolution" by Bill Ahearn. This example has an unmarked barrel with bayonet lug mounted on the bottom towards tree muzzle. Germanic unmarked lock with molded tail, scalloped frozen spring and beveled edges. Brass Germanic furniture. The walnut stock features shaped relief carving around the ramrod entry ferrule, lock, sideplate, barrel tang and comb. The right side of the buttstock is branded "RS" sand has the carved in initials "IE". The front 15-3/8" appear top be a make-do repair from its period of use. The old wooden ramrod is short. Complete with a triangular socket bayonet with "US" marking on socket. CONDITION: Barrel and lock retain a dark brown patina. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and functions well. Brass retains a pleasing soft mustard patina. Stock shows minor age cracks and marks from use. One chip behind barrel tang. Bayonet has a mostly dark brown patina and fits the gun well.
