The Mid Range Ballard was first offered in 1876 running through 1883. This rifle is retailer stamped at barrel breech " V. KINDER EAST SAGINAW" Vincent Kindler opened his shop in 1867 and was a major firearms retailer of the 19th century. All of the details on this rifle are discussed in John Dutcher's book entitled "BALLARD, THE GREAT AMERICAN SINGLE SHOT RIFLE". This rifle was made by J.M. Marlin and so stamped on left side of frame .The "BALLARD A-1 & MID RANGE" engraving surrounded by scroll was the work of L.D. Nimschke. This model features the octagon to round barrel, Globe front sight, and Marlin Mid Range peep sight. There is no cut in barrel for a rear sight. The barrel is finely blued while the action and lever are case color. The under-side of barrel shows the matching stamped 2048 serial number. Top of barrel at breech does not have a caliber stamp. The walnut stock has the checkered swept back pistol grip and the checkered steel buttplate. The checkered forearm has a carved horn tip. Loop lever. CONDITION: Excellent. The lever and hammer still retain color while frame shows generous, albeit darkening, color. Barrel retains at least 95% blue blending with some high edge toning. The stock is excellent with sharp checkering and minimal impressions. Mechanically fine with with a clean and bright bold bore. Arguably, the finest American single shot target rifle ever built and this one is a stellar example.
