Octagonal to round barrel with intercepting wedding band at transition with elongated brass front sight and slight cannon muzzle. Breech decorated with engraving that has peen painted over, "P. Moretta" in a reserve, likely the maker of the barrel. Cast and chased sideplate with a silhouetted bust. Lock, signed at bottom "F. Bonafi" with water proof pan, tailed pan cover, and light scroll engraving. Swan neck cock with scroll and border geometrics. Topjaw and screw possibly replaced. Brass thumbpiece with another silhouette bust surrounded by florals. Steel ramrod with jag, likely the original, retained by turned bronze ferrule, with entrance having a brass floral finial. Trigger guard with a third silhouette bust and floral finials en suite with ramrod channel. Stock with one brass band near forend, possibly as a period repair for a crack that runs along from tip into ramrod channel. Incised carving throughout stock with waves. Brass buttcap with stands of arms. CONDITION: Very good, with an old polish over some scattered oxidation. Lock is en suite. Stock is very good as gently sanded and refinished with some bumps and bruises from age. Brass retains a very pleasant deep mustard patina; buttcap has two pieces missing as if from a puncture. Action works appropriately when operated by hand, bore is very good, smooth, with even oxidation throughout. Sideplate has minor break at rear, leaving tip stranded in wood, buttcap stirrup tips also missing. EW
