Circa 1876 per "British Gunmakers: Volume One - London" by Brown, but it does fall into the gap of approximately 40 guns from 5240 to 5282; charge card in lid dated February 29th, 1876 also confirms date. Dovetail lump barrels with applied Damascus twist and diminutive bead front sight set into a file cut matte rib. Engraved "Joseph Lang & Sons." over left tube, ahead of chamber, and "22 Cockspur St, Pall Mall, London" on right. Two leaf rear sight with one fixed and one folding leaf regulated for 150 and 250 yards respectively, with silver express lines. Sling eye sweated onto underside of rib. Barrel flats with view and proof marks and a 39 bore caliber designation. Fit with extractors. Splinter forearm with a reinforced tip retained by a single key feeding through a central escutcheon, checkered in the English flat top style. Round body action with dovetailed breech face that functioned as an early form of a disc set strikers, engraved with fine scrollwork, strapwork edges, and floral dressed hinge pins and lever pin. Dolphin form hammers with tall cocks. Double triggers bladed for a right handed shooter and protected by a long tang trigger guard that runs all the way to pistol grip cap, engraved with serial number on tang. Action flats with view proof and patent use numbers. Bottom tang turn off lever engraved en suite, with raised lugs to lock lever in place. Back action locks engraved en suite with "JOSEPH LANG & SONS" across top and fit with English half-cock stalking safeties. Richly veined walnut stock with a shadowline cheekpiece, pistol grip with steel cap, sling eye behind pistol grip, and blank silver initial plate at toe line. Buttplate with floral engraving and incised linework with a central checkered band. Housed in a leather wrapped and tabbed case with brass hardware, interior lined in wine-colored felt with a later Joseph Lang and Son trade label, a label with instructions for loading, and a charge card labelled for shots at 100 yards with 130 grains of Curtis & Harveys No 6 powder, an Eley 500 Express bullet dated February 29th, 1876. Other accessories include sling, striker pot, and canvas wallet with wire mop and a cartridge extractor; one spare strap. Weight 9 lbs 6 oz. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels retain the vast majority of their Damascus twist with very fine age spotting and thinning to silver at sharp edges and high traffic areas, such as right barrel where fingers would rest, and in a crescent behind sling eye from sling. Action with the vast majority of the dulling case colors, turn-off lever with essentially silver at lug with better retention in protected areas. Stocks excellent with some minor marks and a grain check on right side. Case with heavy crazing to exterior and warpage to lid, with a tear at rear of lid. Interior relined, but solid and whole, with some age related scuffing on interior. Mechanically fine, bores excellent, bright and shiny, with strong rifling and some very minor frosting. Front sight a well-fit replacement. A much better than normally encountered example, clearly used and well cared for.
