Part of an 1865 5,000 gun contract to arm the Kentucky Home Guard troops protecting Sherman's supply lines. Although delivered too late for service, the carbines are marked "KENTUCKY" on the left side of the breech. Shortened 22" barrel with set back front sight and standard rear. Unique case hardened repeating action which is rotated to load a round from the magazine tube. Plain walnut forend and buttstock. CONDITION: Fine, metal finish rates far better than wood. Barrel retains the vast majority of its still bright blue with some spotting and marks. Receiver likewise exhibits strong and attractive case colors, some areas starting to fade. Forend has scattered dings and nicks, the barrel band an incorrect replacement. Like many of these carbines, the stock is split at the wrist with an older repair. Stock otherwise has some impressions and a crackled, attic burnt finish. Very fine bright and crisp bore with some light cleaned oxidation spots towards the breech. Fine mechanics. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
