Lot consists of: (A) Massachusetts Arms produced Maynard 2nd Model percussion rifle. Dated "1865" on the lower tang. Standard round steel barrel with a second stage octagonal chamber. Original 3-notch flip up sight. Frame is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27 1851/DEC 6 1859" on the left side and "MANUFACTURED BY/ MASS. ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS" on the right. Original blued finish has turned to a nice patina in some areas. Saddle ring bar and saddle ring are still present. Hardwood stock has a light lacquered finish. Boxed "JM" inspector stamp in script as well as the sub-inspector stamp, "GWS" in a rectangular box, also in script. CONDITION: Metal retains 70% of its original finish with mild handling marks and patina in areas. Stock is good overall with mild handling marks and scratches. Sharp rifling in the bore. Hammer and lockup are tight. Nipple retains most of its original shape, showing signs of little use. Mechanically fine. (B) Massachusetts Arms produced Maynard "Target Model" percussion rifle. Similar to the 2nd Model Military carbine, being manufactured simultaneously with Military production carbines. These were made for/sold on the commercial market, this example being dated "1865" on the lower tang. Standard round steel barrel with a second stage octagonal chamber. 2-position flip rear sight, in addition to an adjustable rear tang sight. Front sight is a narrow blade, and is not original to the rifle. Frame is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27 1851/DEC 6 1859" on the left side and "MANUFACTURED BY/ MASS. ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS" on the right. Original blued finish has worn to a patina in most places. Hardwood stock has been sanded at some point. CONDITION: Metal retains 70% of its original finish with mild wear and patina. Stock is good overall with mild dents, scratches and dings. Sharp rifling in the bore. Lock up and hammer have a fair amount of play. Nipple shows signs of little use. Mechanically fine. JWA
