(A) MARTIALLY INSPECTED MAYNARD 1863 2ND MODEL CARBINE
This 2nd Model was made without a patch box and produced from 1863 through 1865. At least three documented union cavalry units were issued this model. Features the blued octagon-to-round barrel, dovetailed front sight, folding ladder leaf rear sight, case color frame and lever, and saddle ring and bar. Walnut stock with metal butt plate. Produced by Massachusetts Arms in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. The left side of stock has a "JM" cartouche stamp for James Mills. Left side of barrel has a "GWS" sub-inspector stamp for George W. Sherman. The left and right side of frame exhibit the Mass Arms legends. CONDITION: Excellent. About half the case colors on frame have faded with balance fading a bit. The screws and hammer retain most of their nitre blue. Barrel retains nearly all of its blue with nominal handling marks. Stock is excellent with minimal impressions. Mechanically sound with a mirror bright bore.
