Originally manufactured in 1888 in standard Model 1884 Rifle configuration and converted for use as a movie prop in the twentieth century. Original barrel and action with reapplied finish. Rear sight removed. The hammer has been replaced with a cast imitation flintlock cock which still actuates the firing pin, and an added imitation frizzen. The barrel bands have also been replaced with large cast brass ones of Charleville style. Stock is original with added Native American brass tack decoration. These conversions using .45-70 blanks were much easier and more reliable than actual flintlocks for film extras. Identically converted rifles were used in John Wayne's famous 1960 "The Alamo" among other classic Westerns. Given the unique tack decoration of this rifle, a film aficionado may be able to find it on screen with some careful examination. It will be tough since this weapon would not pass any close up detailed shot in the film and would have been used by an extra. No studio association stamps observed. CONDITION: Good. The majority of the reapplied blued finish is retained throughout with some toning. The stock has a dry weathered appearance, with numerous impressions and abrasions, as well as a split behind the lock. Strong frosted bore. Mechanically fine.
