Two Hewsons are recorded in London: Thomas is recorded circa 1804-1822, and William circa 1801. Given the working dates, Thomas is the more likely of the 2. Pistols are in identical configuration and made as a pair with octagonal barrels, mushroom front sights, and signed "LONDON" on top rib. Buckhorn rear sight mounted to tang. Captive swivel ramrods feed directly into a reinforced mouth with a beaded trumpet head; barrels retained by keys that feed directly through stock. Locks engraved with sprays of florals and "HEWSON" in center. Cocks are engraved with a slightly different floral style and are not quite of the same quality as locks. Vacant silver thumbpieces mounted to wrist. Trigger guards with playful sprays of florals en suite with lock, tipped by pineapple finials. Plain bag grips with wraparound checkering. CONDITION: Barrel browning has toned throughout, mixing with flashes of dove grey, London address softened somewhat. Some spots of pitting, mostly around nipples and muzzles. Clear Damascus twist patterns. Locks are very good with some slight mossing towards nipple bolster, and some other scattered spots. Cocks with peppering and discoloration, checkering poorly recut. Stocks are very good with handling marks throughout, a few scattered minor chips, and abraded heads. Mechanically fine, bores are very good. Pistol (B) has had breech replaced, while (A) has the breech bevel still in place. Formerly part of the Allan Klein Collection.
