Basically, a commercial offering based on the 1853 pattern Enfield made by Potts & Hunt of London. Between 1861-1865, the Confederate States purchasing agent, Caleb Huse, purchased over 500,000 weapons. The London Armory 1853 Enfield was the most popular but Huse needed more weapons than they could supply so he was instructed to contact other London makers to make up the short fall. One of those companies was Potts & Hunt who produced weapons based on the Model 1853. This is one such example. This example wears no rifling. The lock is simply stamped with maker name and no crown. It is a two band with integral bayonet lug on front band, two swivels, small front sight, no rear sight, metal cleaning rod, full length walnut stock, brass trigger guard & butt plate. The left side of barrel has the English proof marks. CONDITION: Very good. The wood has been refinished and doe have some dings along with E.G. carved on left side of stock. Metal cleaned a bit and in the white. Hammer screw is replaced. Small hairlines at wrist. Bore is dark. There is some pitting at breech.
