For another example, see plate 65.MM on page 115 of "Battle Weapons of the American Revolution" by George Neumann. This pre-1775 musket is marked S&D for makers Splittgerber & Daum, who worked from 1723-1775. The round barrel has a band at the breech and 4 Spandau Prussian proofs and a bayonet lug mounted on the bottom, towards muzzle. The flat banana lock has beveled edges and is marked "POTZDAMMAGAZ" in the center and "S&D" on the middle of the bottom beveled edge. The furniture is brass and of classic Germanic design, nearly identical to the Hessian muskets. The oval wrist escutcheon has the cipher of Frederick II of Prussia, who reigned between 1740 and 1786. The stock is of classic early Prussian form and has relief tear drop carving and relief panels around lock, sideplate and ramrod entry ferrule, butt is of "cow's hoof" form. Complete with its original iron ramrod, iron swing swivels and correct Prussian triangular socket bayonet. CONDITION: Barrel and lock retain a dark undisturbed heavy brown patina. Lock is very strong, functions well and is in its original flintlock configuration. Stock shows some scattered marks from use, some age cracks and minor chips. Brass retains a mustard patina. Bayonet has a matching dark heavy patina. A very nice musket.
