This example is illustrated and described on pages 70-71 of "Evolution of the Brown Bess Musket: Early British Infantry Flintlocks in Context" by Dr. Jay Tartell. There are two other muskets known with Pattern 1703 furniture and locks, and both are identified to Revolutionary War Minutemen. The first is branded "J. DANFORTH" for Jonathan Danforth and is also stocked in cherry with the exact same buttstock form as this example, indicating that it was stocked by the same individual. The second other musket is also stocked in cherry and is inscribed "Tarrant Putnam ye 1775 / MaANSFLD Regt" on the sideplate. The lock on that musket is marked "W./ NUTT / 4", the same maker as this example which is marked "W. / NUTT / 8". The tapered round barrel features a bayonet lug on top towards the muzzle. The breech is marked with a star over "WN" for maker William Nutt, as well as partially visible crown over "AR" and another crown proofmark. The dog lock shows a partially defaced large crown over "AR" in the center along with two deeply-stamped crown over broad arrow proofs, denoting British government ownership. The tail is marked "W / NUTT / 8" (1708). The brass buttplate, triggerguard, sideplate and one ramrod ferrule are all from the original pattern 1703 musket, while the two foremost ramrod ferrules are American manufactured using sheet brass, as is the noseband. Cherry stock of distinct form, matching that of the Danforth Minuteman musket exactly. This is the third example of an American stocked Pattern 1703 that the cataloguer is aware of. With the other two being identified to Minutemen, it is very likely that this musket was used along side the others. CONDITION: Barrel retains a pleasing brown patina. Lock retains a matching patina, is in its original flintlock configuration, functions properly and has excellent markings other than the intentionally defaced cypher in the center. The brass retains a pleasing dark mustard patina. Stock shows minor marks from use, a couple age cracks and a thin sliver along barrel on right side. Iron ramrod appears to be its original. A very important New England stocked American musket. A copy of the book featuring this musket is included.
