(A) RARE BRITISH LONG LAND PATTERN 1730/40 BROWN BESS FLINTLOCK MUSKET DATED 1740.
According to Erik Golsteins book, "The Brown Bess", this model is listed as and considered "Very Rare". The musket is primarily composed of 1742 components with the exception of the earlier 1740 lock. The barrel also pre-dates the 1742 Pattern with early numerical markings at the breech. The barrel is stamped on top with British Tower proofs. The left side is stamped with an "IG" for Joseph Grice and "52". Tang stamped with inspection crown. The convex banana lockplate is engraved with "TOWER / 1740" at the tail and with a large crown over "GR" in the center. Small crown and brass arrow ordnance stamp below the pan denotes British government ownership. The brass furniture is standard Pattern 1742 and features the early ramrod ferrules made to accept a wood ramrod. The wrist escutcheon and sideplate are stamped "T. PENN". The walnut stock is of standard form with a large bulge on the handrail. Complete with iron sling swivels and what is likely its original brass-tipped wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina with some added brown finish. Lock is a very good professional reconversion. Stock has been sanded and has scattered age cracks and marks from use. Small piece replaced above front lock tang. A nice and attractive example of a very rare Brown Bess pattern.
