Lot #3295:
(A) RARE HIGH CONDITION BALL & WILLIAMS .44 CF FALLING BLOCK SPORTING RIFLE
Only offered from 1862 through 1865, with the majority of production sent to the Government for the militia. It is estimated that fewer than 5000 sporting rifles were ever produced. Features the nickel plated frame, lever, and buttplate. Other features include the bottom mounted external shell extractor, octagon barrel, dovetailed front sight, and the 3 - 1/4" flat top rear sporting sight. The walnut stock and matching forearm are finely finished. CONDITION: Excellent. The barrel is a smooth, softened blue patina. The Merwin & Brey agent stamp and maker legend are crisp. Screws are true. Retains nearly all of the nickel including the buttplate with light high edge wear and some very minor bubbling. Mechanically sound with a bright bore. This is one of the finest early Ball sporting rifles extant.
