(A) RARE NEW HAVEN ARMS VOLCANIC NO. 2 NAVY LEVER ACTION PISTOL
Smith & Wesson patented the lever action repeating pistol in 1854, producing them only in 1854-1855. In July of 1855, the name was changed to Volcanic Repeating Arms company where they continued this type of pistol from 1855 into 1857 where they again reorganized into the New Haven Arms Company in April of 1857 where as they produced various models of this pistol until 1860. This example is a No. 2 Navy with the rare 6" barrel. It is estimated that only 300 of this variation were ever made. It still features the blued octagon barrel stamped "Patent Feb. 14, 1854 New Haven Conn". Brass frame and two piece walnut grips. There are matching "2155" stamped inside both grips, inside the frame, inside both side plates, on the lever, and inner toggle. The lever exhibits a "K" fitters mark. CONDITION: Fine. The barrel still exhibits a soft blue patina hue and barrel legends are all legible. The brass has really nicely and evenly toned. Grips are fine. Bore is well defined but frosted. Cocks single action but lever does not totally engage for repeat. Simply a stunning untouched and extremely rare short barrel Navy.
