Lot #2098:
(A) RARE SPECIAL ORDER SHARPS MODEL 1853 SLANT BREECH PERCUSSION SPORTING CARBINE
The serial number falls into the John Brown range. The carbine is a special order sporting model that features no saddle bar, no US proofs or inspectors, fine double set triggers, silver plated patch box, butt plate and barrel band. Highly finished walnut stock and matching forearm. Frame has the priming arm, Sharps 1852 legend stamped on lock, serial number and Sharps 1848 legend on upper tang, and the Sharps Hartford legend stamped on barrel. The folding ladder sight has the 1859 Lawrence legend along with a special German silver blade front sight. There is an extra period sight slot cut at barrel breech for additional sight. CONDITION: Very good to fine. The barrel, lock, action, lever and hammer are a homogenous patina. All legends are crisp. Plating is nearly complete showing some nominal thinning and wear. Stock is excellent with minimal dings and a hand rubbed piano finish. The tight multi- groove rifling is bold. The trigger works but does not set. Nipple needs to be cleared. An unusual John Brown period sporting carbine in fine condition.
