Lot #1384:
(A) RARE ULRICH ENGRAVED MARLIN BALLARD NO 6 SCHUETZEN HEAVY BARREL TARGET RIFLE IN .38-55
According to John Dutcher in "Ballard: The Great American Single Shot Rifle", he explains this model in detail beginning on page 171. Matching numbers on bottom of barrel, frame, and inside the butt plate. Heavy octagon to round barrel and stamped "38-55" at breech. Wind gauge front sight and mid range Vernier tang sight, no slot for a rear barrel sight. Left side of frame with Marlin Ballard legend. The frame, block, lever, and hammer are case colored. Standard features include the double set triggers, the ball and spur lever, and the heavy nickel plated Swiss butt plate. The deluxe checkered highly figured walnut stock with roll over cheek piece. Checkered forearm with horn tip. The frame is engraved by Ulrich or his shop and features the stag and doe on left side in vignette with the bear on right side. According to Dutcher, any high condition true Schuetzen rifle in unaltered condition is extremely rare and these seldom come up for sale. CONDITION: Excellent. The barrel is a pleasing mix of patina with a blue hue along with some age spotting. Case colors are still strong with nearly complete coverage. The stocks are excellent with sharp checkering and nominal impressions. There are none of the typical wrist cracks. Mechanically sound with a bold, slightly frosted bore. The buttplate retains the majority of its nickel finish.
