(A) SCARCE US SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1882 CHAFFEE-REESE BOLT ACTION RIFLE.
Only 753 of these interesting repeating bolt action rifles devised by by Reuben Chaffee and General James Reece were manufactured by Springfield for trials and were not ultimately adopted. The blued "V / P" and eagle head proofed barrel is fitted with a pinned blade front sight and "C-R" marked ladder rear sight. Receiver is marked "U.S.-SPRINGFIELD.-1884". The full length walnut stock has a boxed script "SWP / 1884" Samuel Porter inspector cartouche stamped near the butt plate. CONDITION: Very good. The arsenal blue has largely faded to an aged plum patina. Stock has light scattered marks and a legible cartouche. Bore is well defined with some frosting.
