10,001 Model 1871 rifles were produced by Springfield under license from Remington from 1871 to 1872, this example is dated 1872. Standard length bright finished barrel with bayonet lug, barleycorn front sight and folding ladder rear. Case hardened rolling block receiver marked "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1872" under a federal eagle motif. Full length walnut forend mounted with a pair of spring retained bands. Straight grain walnut stock with script "ESA" Erskine Allin inspection cartouche and "US" stamped butt plate. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel cleaned bright with some mild patina. Action retains traces of faint case color with an overall smoky mottled appearance. Stocks have been lightly sanded and reoiled, the cartouche remaining legible. Some scattered light impressions remain. Strong, well defined bright bore with some black powder abrasion. Fine mechanics.
