Lot #3080:
(A) UNSIGNED WILLIAM CRAIG ATTRIBUTED PERCUSSION KENTUCKY RIFLE.
A nice example of the Pennsylvania gunmaker's work of this period. Unmarked rifled octagonal barrel. Brass toeplate and faceted full crescent buttplate. Very nice engraved four-piece brass patchbox. There is a silver hunter's star behind cheekpiece. The brass sideplate is also engraved. The percussion lock is marked "WHITMORE WOLFF / DUFF & Co. / PITTSBURGH PA". Figured maple stock. Stripe-stained ramrod appears to be original. Adjustable set triggers. CONDITION: Barrel and lock retain a pleasing dark brown patina, some corrosion around bolster and on lock below bolster. Lock does not stay on half-cock. Brass retains a pleasing mustard patina. Stock retains a pleasing dark patina with scattered minor marks from use. A very nice rifle in great condition. Complete with an article on a signed Craig rifle that is very similar.
