This Colt Single action was the subject of an in depth article published in the "Rampant Colt" (The official publication of the Colt Collectors Association) in the spring of 2017. Black powder frame chambered for the .38-40 cartridge with blue and case colored finishes and Colt hard rubber grips. Serial numbered 143384 and has a very unusual 7-3/4 inch barrel. Single line Colt address on top of barrel with the front blade sight contour of the later 1910 through 1930's profile. Barrel is numbered 646 under the ejector housing and the cylinder is numbered the same on the face. Assembly number 414 is found on loading gate. The six pointed star inspection is found on rear of trigger guard on right side indicating factory return or repair. Accompanied by a factory letter dated 2005 showing that serial number 143384 was shipped in caliber .38-40, 7-1/2 inch barrel, blue finish to Simmons Hardware St, Louis MO. Jan. 16, 1892 in a 3 gun shipment. No other information is provided. It is believed the revolver was returned to Colt in the period of 1910 til 1930's and was rebarreled with this unusual barrel. The overall finish is consistent with the rest of the gun and appears to have been on it from a very long period of time. This "COLT ANOMALY" as it has been referred to is a unique example of Colt's production. A copy of "THE RAMPANT COLT" detailing this Single Action is included with the revolver as is the factory letter. CONDITION: Good. Finish is worn to an even dove gray patina with no evidence of original finish remaining. Bore is very good with strong rifling with slight darkness in grooves. Barrel address and markings are legible. Grips are very good with consistent wear for age. Hammer and cylinder pin retaining screws are contemporary replacements. Main spring and main spring retaining screw are newer replacements. Exterior of gun has numerous scrapes and minor scratches and areas of light pitting. Colt letter is crisp as is copy of "RAMPANT COLT" magazine.
