Approximately 5000 of these rifle muskets were altered at the Springfield Arsenal in 1865. This is the only Allin conversion where the barrel was not cut off but was instead fitted with a new trapdoor breech. The barrel measures 37 - 3/4" from breech face to muzzle. With the first type trapdoor conversion block, not stamped, with large release lever on right side. Rear sight is folding leaf Civil War type. The lock is dated 1865 with "US SPRINGFIELD" and eagle while the rear of cut barrel reads "864" for 1864. This is a three band with full length walnut stock. All metal is finished in the white, with exception to the block, lock and hammer. Includes a metal rod. CONDITION: Excellent. All the white metal is clean with light oxidation. The block retains most blue with some freckling. The lock and hammer have faded to a blue grey patina. All legends are sharp. Stock is fine with scattered dents and bruises with the ESA cartouche no longer visible. The bore is bright.
