This extremely early M1A is numbered 00002. Springfield Armory, as founded by Elmer Ballance began assembling the first civilian M14 (M1A) rifles in San Antonio around 1970. Rifle is fitted with a National Match SAK Saco-Lowell barrel dated "8-65" with "1206RADIUM S A TEX 78216" address on the underside. Protected blade front sight and National Match aperture rear. Rifle is also fitted with an El Paso Weaver K5 scope. USGI internals. The nicely figured walnut USGI stock has been gloss finished and the switch slot filled in, a faint DOD eagle remaining on the left side. CONDITION: Excellent. Nearly all of the parkerized finishes are retained with some minor spotting. Stock is fine with some scattered marks. Crisp, bright bore. Fine mechanics. Optic would benefit from some professional cleaning. A scarce, very early Texas M1A.
