Circa 1927-1930 per Holland & Holland's serial number document. Chopper lump barrels with depressed mushroom bead front sight on a partially sunken smooth concave rib, engraved over right chamber "HOLLAND & HOLLAND", left with New Bond street address. Rear of rib with a 2" strip of floral engraving, breeches dressed with bands of stiffleaf engraving, and unusual line like a chopper lump through 1 - 1/4" of engraving with cross line. Underside of barrels with matching serial number, Holland & Holland coil self opening system, and flats with London nitro proofs for a choked 12 gauge with 2 - 1/2" chambers at 1 - 1/8 oz of shot. Forearm loop with "20521" abutting. Splinter forearm with reinforced Anson release and point pattern checkering with mullered borders about an open central diamond with diamond escutcheon. Exterior iron engraved with classic medium sized Royal scrollwork. Interior iron with matching serial number in recess for self opening system. Action and locks engraved with Royal scrollwork with beaded borders, boldly signed "HOLLAND & HOLLAND" in an ornamental element on locks, "PATENT" on hand detach screw, and gold line cocking indicators. "ROYAL / SELF-OPENER PATENT 1922" on bottom of action. Break open lever checkered for a right hand break and engraved "ROYAL EJECTOR". Unusual trigger with a rocking selector and an automatic safety with gold intaglio "SAFE" ahead of slide. Walnut stock with teardrops behind locks, point pattern checkering with mullered borders about the English straight grip, and a diamond cross-section. Golden initial oval at toe line and a NoShoc red rubber recoil pad. CONDITION: Refreshed and conserved in the English tradition. Barrels have been subject to a good quality reblue with some scattered pockmarks over chambers and some softness to sharp edges and engraving, with scattered handling marks and a few scattered dings. Chambers have been lengthened to 2 - 3/4". Forearm missing a chip along right side of tip, with scattered handling marks and dings, some heavier areas that have abraded heads. Action and locks very good, essentially a smooth dove grey, with some areas of cleaned oxidation to edges. Trigger guard heavily softened by reblue and oxidation. Butt with heavy marks from the field and some heavy dents and strikes that have abraded checkering. Mechanically fine excepting trigger selector which will not articulate, ejectors are strong and in time, bores with firing residue but smooth; left breech face with corrosion on left side. A H&H Royal with plenty of experience.
