Lot #1251:
(C) RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 25 SLIDE ACTION TRENCH SHOTGUN RETAILED BY PEACE OFFICER EQUIPMENT CO.
The right side of the frame is marked "PEACE OFFICER EQUIPMENT CO. ST. JOSEPH MO USA". The Model 25 was a "no-frills" shotgun offered by Winchester from 1949 through 1955. Buttstock is marked "K.C.P.D." and is believed to be from the Kansas City Police Department. Bruce Campbell refers to these altered guns on page 155 in his book "Combat Shotguns". He discusses where mail order companies, such as this law enforcement supply company that began in 1920 and was well known for making custom police guns, were buying inexpensive military surplus and making custom firearms for law enforcement. There are no records of any military purchases of this weapon nor any mention of them ever being assembled by Winchester. In addition to the left side receiver stamp, the barrel choke marking "Mod" has be crossed out and "Cyl" engraved in its stead. It is a solid frame gun with blue finish, plain walnut stock with pistol grip, grooved flat bottom forearm, and a black Winchester butt plate. This mail order company shortened the barrels, altered the choke marking, and fitted with a ventilated heat shield with bayonet lug and sold them as such. CONDITION: Excellent. This gun has seen little use and retains the majority of its blue finish exhibiting minor handling marks. Stocks are also excellent displaying minimal impressions. Mechanically sound with a frosted bore. This is a very rare gun that is seldom seen on the market and identified with the "K.C.P. D." markings identifying it to one of the most active police departments of the period.
