Very fine WW2 inspected Winchester Model 1897 Trench shotgun. Classically configured as a 12 gauge with a 2 - 3/4", Cylinder choke, and ventilated handguard. US inspected with Ordnance Bomb proof on top of chamber as well as "US" marking with ordnance bomb marking on left side of receiver. Manufactured 1942 with varnished walnut stocks with black checkered plastic buttplate with Winchester monogram. Wood is inspected with "GHD" in box over ordnance wheel marking for Col. Guy H. Drewry. Factory sling swivels mounted at toe of butt and at front of bayonet lug assembly. The famed Winchester Model 97 trench gun saw extensive use by the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre. The ability to slam-fire the gun made it very popular in close-in jungle fighting. These shotguns continued service through the Vietnam conflict, thus reducing their survival rate in fine original condition. CONDITION: Very fine with metal retaining 95% overall condition with some light period of use oxidation and thinning. The varnished walnut stocks are very fine with some light period of use impressions and bruises. The bore is bright and excellent. The action operates properly and locks solidly. An exceptionally fine example of the famed World War II issued 1897 Trench shotgun.
