This Maxim was manufactured by DWM in 1918 and visible numbers are matching, including top cover, feed block, backplate, charging handle, check lever, recoil plates, and the barrel (6861d). This oil caps on the backplate handles have transposed numbers (16), and the lock is an unnumbered armorer’s replacement. Fusee cover is unnumbered, which is correct for this vintage. What really sets this gun apart from other “Depot Guns” aside from the matching barrel is the sled and accessories, which makes this such an outstanding display piece. Accessories include an original 1918 dated sled mount complete with 2 spare locks, a spare barrel (1857), cartridge tongs, case extraction tool, and reproduction armor shield plate, barrel jacket armor, and front water jacket end cap armor. Note that the leather pads on this sled are in great condition. Drain valve present at front of water jacket as well as wood thumb piece on water fill cap. Electronic NFA registry indicates "Form 2 Registration" in the manufacturer's block. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent original finish with scattered areas of brown patina with some light pitting here and there. Water jacket and water jacket armor, and armor plate are a faithfully accurate non-lead based paint. Sled appears to have original paint with some spots of brown patina where paint has flaked away. Wood handles are extremely fine with a couple of small dings. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright in both barrels. Lock faces are also extremely fine. Gun mechanics are crisp and positive, and action moves smoothly when operated by hand. This is a Full-Auto only machine gun. The Maxim MG-08 is one of the most recognizable weapons of World War I, and remained in service throughout the Weimar era and in a rear security role with the Germans through the end of World War II. In recent years there have been very successful conversions of the MG-08 to fire 7.62 Russian ammunition. This particular specimen has been painstakingly brought to the highest level of an attractive display piece which could also be brought to the range where one could be certain it would gather a lot of attention. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4. JWK 2023-4-22
