This Savage model 1916 ground gun is marked on top cover “LEWIS MACHINE GUN MFG, BY SAVAGE ARMS, UTICA. N.Y.U.S.A.“ over barely discernable Indian head logo, indicating that this is a pre-merger gun. No manufacturer markings visible on receiver. Serial number is crown over “BF” proof visible, forward of magazine post. Rear sight marked for .303 MK VII ammunition. Savage patent dates on rear buttplate. 3 standard British marked 47 round pan magazines and 1 mainspring assembly are included with this lot. There is a brown canvas magazine carrier. Receiver serial number is the only visible serial number. 1 original leather sling is included. Electronic NFA registry indicates “Lewis Machine Gun” as the manufacturer. Dovetailed fitted corners and contemporary internal blocks Lewis machine transit chest is included with this lot. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine as refinished with a softening to the Savage Indian head logo. Serial number remains very clear on top of the receiver. There is some loss of finish to a gray patina right at the edge of the muzzle, as well as a loss of finish with some dings to the receiver on the left side, forward of the charging handle. Hand grip and buttstock hardware have not been refinished and is more of a pleasing, brown patina. Wood is extremely fine with some light dings and handling marks. Transit chest is in World War II era army green paint with contemporary felt covered wood inserts and is quite an attractive piece. Pan magazines run from good to very fine. Bore has strong, bright rifling. Bolt face is extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp and smooth. This is a full auto only machine gun. The Lewis machine gun was a preferred model light machine gun of World War I. Reliable, portable, and relatively light in comparison to the water-cooled guns then employed. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE.
