U.S. Savage Lewis Model 1914 machine gun in .303 British, apparently taken into British service with British proof marks in evidence on feed arm, rear sight, and buttstock. In addition to the Savage Indian Head logo on top of the receiver, there is also a professionally engraved "US HGD" marking on right side of receiver, just below and slightly forward of the ejection port. Includes an exceptionally rare early original heavy Savage rigid mount (almost a tripod), as well as an original British tripod with Lewis adapter, British style clamp on bipod, clamp on anti-aircraft front sight, 4 spare barrels, 1 op rod assembly, reproduction loading tool, transit chest, a British proofed 97 round .303 British pan magazine, and canvas pan magazine carrier. Receiver number is the only visible serial number. Mechanics are smooth and positive. Parts all appear to be of original vintage. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine, showing some obvious use with handling marks and loss of finish towards the rear of the cooling jacket, with some slight marring to the aluminum fins visible forward of the receiver. Bluing is extremely fine, with loss of finish to gray patina at the contact points for the pan magazine. Wood shows numerous handling marks, but remains very strong and serviceable. Bore is very good to extremely fine, with shiny and strong rifling needing cleaning. Spare barrels are all have bores that are extremely fine, being shiny and bright. This is a fully automatic only machine gun. A scarce and highly desirable Savage manufactured Lewis machine gun in .303 British. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 or 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2021-04-001
CORRECTION: Great news! This Savage Lewis gun was part of a special contract for the Navy in .303 and uses some leftover Canadian contract parts. The Navy serial number is on the forward part of the receiver. British tripod with Lewis adaptor is not present with this lot.
