Genuine World War II Navy Oerlikon machine gun cannon marked, "20 MM / MK4 / MOD 1" over serial number over, "6MOCNOPSO". Additional markings, "U.S. Armament Corp Ephrata PA" over "MK IV" over serial number, "N.O.P. / CENTER LINE" over "W" logo. This gun was missing some parts when originally acquired by the consignor, and it was taken to U.S. Armament Corp where they acquired the necessary parts and completed the gun. The 20mm Oerlikon gun has a history dating back to the first World War, when the Germans originally designed it as the "Becker" gun. Due to the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles, after WWI, improvements were carried on in Switzerland by SEMAG, acquiring the name Oerlikon from the suburb of Zurich where the SEMAG firm was based. The Oerlikon was developed primarily for aircraft use. France, Germany, and Japan all acquired licenses to produce the gun. But it was in the British and United States navies where it saw the most widespread use during WWII. It was an effective short range ant-aircraft weapon utilized on ships and immortalized in films, especially, "Victory at Sea". A 2000 grain projectile propelled by 400 grains of IMR 4831 ripped through early WWII aircraft, and these guns were replacing the U.S. Browning .50 cal on U.S. navy ships from 1942 on until the 40mm Bofors supplanted it in turn. One magazine drum is included with this lot, and should the buyer desire it, U.S. Armament Corp has indicated it can produce an appropriate mount for this piece so it can be fired at the range, and/or otherwise make a very impressive display. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent refinish upon refurbishment. Bore and bolt face are both very fine. Gun mechanics are crisp. This is quite a rare item to surface and this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of these very historic WWII anti-aircraft cannon. Would make a very impressive and recognizable museum piece. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4. JWK 2023-9-59
