Cochran's 1837 patent is considered to be among the first of the turret firearms, and utilized a rotating disk with chambers advanced by hand and brought inline with chamber and barrel, with underbarrel ignition. Top strap that retains the disk is marked "COCHRAN'S PATENT C.B. ALLEN SPRINGFIELD MASS / PATENT APRIL 29 1837". Brass frame with integral barrel with octagonal chamber and rounded barrel. Underhammer trigger and top strap of iron. Wooden grip with incised florals at top and slightly flared butt. Stamped "85" right side of frame, behind recoil shield, on right side of octagonal section of barrel, right side of underhammer, and underside of disk. Iron appears period but brass is of indeterminate age. CONDITION: Brass with a deep mustard patina throughout with some lightening at edges and dark patina that appears to be an applied chemical. Iron is essentially a smooth chocolate patina throughout with some flashes of silvering to high edges and operational areas. Grip of recent construction. Mechanically fine, although latch does not always catch, bore with heavy frosting throughout and some crystallization towards chamber.
