Lot #3274:
(A) EXTREMELY RARE DAN WESSON FIRE ARMS COMPANY 12 GAUGE SIDE BY SIDE HAMMER SHOTGUN.
It is estimated that only around 200 of these Wesson 1867 patent doubles were ever made. It is a most unusual patent with a lifter at upper tang that allows barrels to be tilted down for loading. There is some light engraving on the case color receiver that is attributed to Gustave Youngs shop along with light engraving on trigger guard. The hammers are also engraved and case color. The barrels are browned Damascus with single bead front sight. The rib is engraved at breech "WESSON FIRE ARMS CO. SPRINGFIELD MASS". Both upper and lower tangs are engraved. The straight grip walnut stock is finely hand checkered and has a sliver escutcheon at base. A 3/4" black spacer was later added as well as an old red Hawkins waffle pad. The unusual two piece forearm is checkered and secured with keys. Shotgun features dual triggers. The walnut is fiery 3X or 4X quality. The forearm has an ebony insert. CONDITION: Excellent. The frame and hammers retain the majority of the bright case colors. The barrels are finely browned with some darker age spotting. The trigger guard has faded patina. Stocks are excellent with sharp checkering and minimal impressions. Mechanically sound and tight. Bores are bright. This shotgun is almost impossible to find and this example is in superb condition.
