Lot #2143:
(A) FACTORY ENGRAVED DELUXE BURGESS SLIDE ACTION SHOTGUN WITH SPARE BARREL ASSEMBLY.
These extremely scarce slide action shotguns were made by the Burgess Gun Company in Buffalo New York from 1892 through 1899 when they were purchased by Winchester and never again manufactured. The slide that allowed rounds to chamber and extract was a metal sliding sleeve with an attached checkered walnut pistol grip. When pulled rearward, the entire trigger guard also moved, ejecting the fired shell and moving another into position from the loading tube beneath the barrel. This example features the browned Damascus barrel with a solid matted rib. The patent legends are atop the rib while the high polished bright blue frame is engraved BURGESS GUN CO. BUFFALO N.Y. USA. The frame is lightly engraved with decorative scroll. Featuring the deluxe hand checkered grip, its fiery grained walnut stock and matching checkered forearm The solid red recoil pad is a more modern replacement. Gun comes with an extra 28" cylinder choked barrel with same rib and patent legends that has its own identically checkered forearm. CONDITION: Excellent. The frame retains at least 90% of its high polish blue finish showing minor high area and handling wear. The mounted 30" barrel shows off a beautifully patterned brown Damascus finish displaying sundry handling marks. The stock is in excellent condition showing minor impressions. The extra barrel and forearm are in commensurate condition. Both bores are bright.
