(A) FINE DOCUMENTED PAIR OF BRITISH OVER UNDER DOUBLE LOCK FLINTLOCK PISTOLS BY JAMES BARBAR, EX. WARREN MOORE COLLECTION.

This exceptional pair are featured in plate 46 of "Weapons of the American Revolution and Accoutrements" by Warren Moore. These pistols were made around 1740-50 by James Barbar (worked 1722 - 1773), a prominent maker and Huguenot. The twin over/under barrels have swamped muzzles. Ramrods mounted on right sides, one a replacement. Tops of barrels on both engraved "LONDON" in front of view and proof marks in addition to star over "IB" mark for James Barbar. The bottoms on breeches are stamped with private London proof and view marks. The pistols feature double triggers. Both have uniquely designed locks on both sides marked "BARBAR" in an arch on the tails. Scalloped and decorated frizzen springs. The wrist escutcheons have shell designs on tops and are engraved with a family crest below "GOD BE GUIDE", possibly the crest of the Earl of Glengall. Walnut stocks of attractive early Georgian form with relief carved shells behind barrel tangs and relief teardrops behind locks. The full stirrup steel pommel caps have silver grotesque masks, a combination frequently used by Barbar. The steel trigger guards are elaborately engraved with flowers and have detailed finials. A truly extraordinary pair with excellent provenance. CONDITION: Both pistols function properly and are in their original flintlock configurations. All steel components are cleaned in the English fashion and have light pitting. Silver retains a pleasing patina. Stocks show some minor scattered marks from use. A fine pair.
